Inclusion

Our club was established with the specific aim of creating an inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly club where everyone is welcome to play a game in a safe environment. We are also a proud member of the Safe Space Alliance.

We are a community-run club with a council member available at every meeting if you have any questions, feedback or if you have any concerns.

History

Over our long and storied history, H.A.T.E has gained a reputation for being the friendliest and (occasionally) the rowdiest wargaming club in London. We have sometimes even won tournaments, which was a surprise to everyone frankly!

First founding

Our club was started in 2012 by a group of friends based in East London who shared a love of Warhammer, role-playing games and all things tabletop-based. The plan was always to run a club that focused on playing enjoyable games with friends, growing the gaming community and creating a space which is safe and inclusive. The club has also always been run along anarchist principles of community-up rather than top-down leadership.

Led by “Chairman” Dan, the original members clobbered together as much scenery as they could fit in the van and sought out to find a suitable venue…

Elektrowerkz

The first “Hackney Area Tabletop Enthusiasts” night was at the Elektrowerkz in Angel, Islington. As well as games of 40K (including many of the brand-spanking new plastic Knight kits), the club played new games like the WW2 system “Bolt Action” (I wonder whatever happened to that?). There was even some talk of games of the new fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons!

After a couple of successful nights at the new venue, we began looking for a more permanent home. Following a brief interval where we became a board game and RPG club operating out of a pub in Islington, we eventually struck gold.

Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club

Situated at the heart of the East End, our club operated out of Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club from 2014 to 2024. There we burnished our reputation as a destination gaming space. As well as Warhammer 40,000, Fantasy Battles, Age of Sigmar and Horus Heresy we expanded our horizons into new territories such as Infinity, Frostgrave, historicals and indie games. Soon Blood Bowl, Mordheim and a resurgent Necromunda also joined the long list of games we played at the club.

H.A.T.E also hosted multiple role-playing campaigns running out of the Boat Bar. We hosted mega-campaign weekends for 40k, Horus Heresy and other systems, including a Bolt Action weekender and an epic Frostgrave event. Almost without realising, we built up the now near-legendary bitz box as well!

Karamel N22

In 2024, the time came to move again. Since September 2024 the (moderately) rebranded Hobby And Tabletop Enthusiasts have been operating out of the excellent Karamel N22 club and art space in Wood Green. There you can find us and take part in our ongoing campaigns, including Infinity, Mordheim, Necromunda and Frostgrave. You can also join us for games on our purpose-made 40k and Horus Heresy scenery and all the other old favorites such as RPGs and historical and many more. You can also join us for a pint, a paint and the occasion kit-bash session.
